Contemporary Landscape

2020

Acrylic on wood panel

Each 30 x 40 cm

A collection of 6 acrylic paintings, each of which represents a specific moment of the landscape in Hong Kong, positions the spectator in an ambiguous relationship with the environment - Intimate, yet estranged; involved, yet evading.

The genesis of this series comes from an increasing sense of estrangement that I encountered towards everyday life and the landscape around it. The urban jungle is under constant construction with little trace of its originality, nature becoming decorations and reality hidden in reflections. As Catherine Grout mentioned in Représentations et Expériences du Paysage, the creation of the landscape is the creation of a connection with the world around us. Paintings in this work open multiple gateways that channel viewers’ space into the exact location depicted in the exact moment. With an absent human presence in the constructed images, viewers are directed to act as a missing piece of the puzzle.
